The Big Bend Field Trip is a 5-6 day adventure that the club takes during the winter break. In order to attend this trip, members must volunteer a certain amount of hours for the club.
On the first day at BIg Bend, we hike along the Rio Grande inside Santa Elena Canyon which exposes
sedimentary beds and features that many students have learned about in classes. The follow morning the group begins their decent to one of the highest points in Texas, Emory Peak. Although the three hour hike is rigorous, the view from 7,825 ft is breath taking.
After a long relaxing lunch, the group hikes down from the summit and prepares to head back home to Baton
Rouge. Along the way, we stop in Sonora, Texas to visit The Caverns of Sonora. These cavern are consider one of the most decorated caves in world, containing a wide variety of diverse formations that are not found in many other caverns.
